Caulfield Guineas 2026 market overview

Warwoven leads at $2.25, out slightly from $2.20, with Blind Raise steady at $3.70. There is then a gap to Tron Bolt ($9) and Central Europe ($14, in from $15). Call Me Coach has firmed from $18 to $16, and Diameter has drifted from $27 to $31.

Favourites have been beaten in each of the last three runnings, and the last favourite to win was Golden Mile in 2022. Even so, eight of the last 16 winners started at $5 or shorter, and only three paid more than $12.

Our Caulfield Guineas best bet: Warwoven

Warwoven is the best three-year-old in the race on what he has already done. He has beaten Australia's best colts twice in a fortnight, and the Golden Rose was a demolition. He is the favourite for a reason, and we're happy to be with him.

The Golden Rose was the run of the spring

Warwoven won the Group 1 Golden Rose at Rosehill on 26 September by 3.16 lengths in 1:20.93 for the 1400 metres. He beat St Gotthard and Under Focus, and the field included three Group 1-winning two-year-olds from last season. Tron Bolt was fifth, beaten five lengths, and Central Europe was 10th.

The double, and the path to Caulfield

He had already won the Group 2 Run To The Rose over 1200 metres on 12 September. The Golden Rose and Caulfield Guineas double has been done by The Autumn Sun (2018) and Ole Kirk (2020).

Will he run 1600 metres?

This is his first start at 1600 metres. The Golden Rose was his first start at 1400 metres, and he finished it off strongly. Bjorn Baker said Warwoven "relaxed beautifully" in the Golden Rose and that his mother was "really good at 2000 metres". He is fourth-up and fit, and Rachel King keeps the ride.

The case against

He has never raced at 1600 metres, and he has never raced anticlockwise. Barrier 6 is wider than ideal: 12 of the 15 winners from 2010 to 2024 started from barriers 1 to 5. He has won one of three on soft tracks, and Caulfield was Soft 5 on Thursday.

Caulfield Guineas 2026 contenders and form analysis

2. Warwoven ($2.25)

Bjorn Baker's colt has won five of his eight starts, including the Group 3 Pago Pago Stakes, the Run To The Rose and the Golden Rose. Rachel King keeps the ride. Baker has said a run in the Cox Plate is possible, depending on how he comes through Saturday.

5. Blind Raise ($3.70)

The Busuttin and Young-trained gelding has won four of his five starts. He won the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) by 2.75 lengths at $2.40 after sitting outside the leader, and before that the Listed McKenzie Stakes at Sandown. His only defeat was ninth in the Sires' Produce on a soft Eagle Farm track. Barrier 2 and Blake Shinn suit him. But he has never raced beyond 1400 metres, only one gelding has won since 2010, and no Prelude winner has won the Guineas since Helmet in 2011. We're against him tomorrow. At $3.70, there are too many questions.

4. Tron Bolt ($9)

Chris Waller's colt won the Group 1 JJ Atkins over 1600 metres at Eagle Farm in June, on a Heavy 9 track, at $1.80. He is unbeaten in two heavy-track starts. He was seventh in the Run To The Rose and fifth in the Golden Rose behind Warwoven, but he is third-up and back to a mile. Barrier 11 is the widest gate.

7. Central Europe ($14)

The Frankel colt was fourth in the Run To The Rose, 1.75 lengths behind Warwoven, at $5. He then ran 10th in the Golden Rose after going too fast early. James McDonald takes the ride for Waller from barrier 7.

11. Call Me Coach ($16)

The Freedmans' Dundeel colt is unbeaten in two starts, at Hawkesbury and then a Cranbourne benchmark 66 by 1.5 lengths at $1.35. This is a huge rise in class for his first start in stakes company. Mark Zahra rides from barrier 5. Anthony Freedman won the race in 2019 with Super Seth, also by Dundeel.

The rest of the field

Diameter ($31) won the Group 2 Stutt Stakes over 1600 metres at Caulfield by a short head from stablemate Somethings Burnin' ($27). Wolf Gap ($18) has been beaten twice by Blind Raise this preparation. Tornado Valley ($27) was second in the Prelude, while Unit Five ($23) and Seraphox ($61) need big improvement.

Central Europe went too fast in the Golden Rose, so expect a genuine tempo if he goes forward again. That suits Warwoven, who relaxes and finishes strongly from midfield. Blind Raise will be handy from barrier 2 but will be doing work over a mile for the first time. Tron Bolt has to find cover from barrier 11.

History says… Twelve of the 15 winners from 2010 to 2024 started from barriers 1 to 5. The exceptions were Mighty Boss (barrier 17, 2017), Griff (6, 2023) and Private Life (11, 2024).

Caulfield track condition and weather for the Caulfield Guineas

Caulfield was rated Soft 5 at the 8am inspection on Thursday, with the rail true and 73.8mm of rain since the last meeting. The Guineas was listed Soft 6 at acceptances. The Bureau of Meteorology forecast is a 40% chance of up to 1mm on Saturday and a top of 21°C, after a warm, windy Friday. An upgrade is possible, so recheck the rating on race morning. Fifteen of the last 16 Guineas were run on a Good track.

Caulfield Guineas history

The Caulfield Guineas was first run in 1881 and has always been a mile race for three-year-olds. It was a principal race until 1979, when it became a Group 1. During World War II it was run at Flemington. Its early winners include Ajax (1937), who went on to win 14 races now rated Group 1.

Few races have a stronger honour roll. Storm Queen (1966) and Surround (1976) won it as fillies, and Manikato (1978), Mahogany (1993) and All Too Hard (2012) became champions. Redoute's Choice (1999) and Lonhro (2001) both used it as a step to careers as champion sires.

Today it is worth $3 million, and it is the feature race on the opening day of the Melbourne Racing Club's spring carnival. Chris Waller has won the last two runnings and four since 2015. The market has been hard to read lately: favourites have lost three years in a row, and Mighty Boss won at $101 in 2017. The Golden Rose and Prelude are now the two key lead-ups, and this year they produced the top two in the betting.
